Where the two markets disagreed

Japan's strongest sector was Electric Power & Gas (+5.40%) while the US put Energy on top (+2.20%). Reading one market and assuming the other followed is the mistake this table is meant to prevent.

Notable single-session moves

At the most recent close, the largest daily gainers were Sandisk +11.90% in the US and SoftBank Group +11.78% in Japan. On volume, Lululemon Athletica traded at 8.6× its 20-day average in the US, and Nidec at 4.0× in Japan.

Volume that arrives without a matching price move is often the more interesting of the two: it is attention showing up before the market has settled on what it means.

Method and limits

Figures are daily closes from Yahoo Finance. 1W is 5 trading days, 1M is 21 trading days, YTD is measured against last year's closing price. Sector figures cover the 11 US SPDR sector ETFs and the 17 TOPIX-17 sector ETFs in full. The single-stock lines come from the top-ranked names of the latest session, not from a scan of every stock's weekly return, so they should be read as "notable at this close" rather than "the biggest move of the week".

Data as of the 2026-09-04 US close and the 2026-09-04 Tokyo close. The two markets do not always close on the same date.
